Pay Rate:  $28.01 per hr.

 

Important Notice:

B.3?STATEMENT OF WORK?

Services of one (1) full-time certified Medical Technologists, two (2) full-time Phlebotomists and two (2) part-time.  For the part time if you have any candidates who are specifically available for the following schedule—Monday to Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Phlebotomists at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, 820 S. Damen Avenue, Chicago, IL 60612. The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Technologist and Phlebotomist shall include but are not limited to the following:

Medical Technologist • Performs assigned tasks with minimal oversight. • Performs a full range of automated and non-automated laboratory procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, and immunohematology according to established protocols. • Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis; ensuring that the physiologic states of the specimen properties are maintained. • Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques in accordance with established protocols. • Recognizes and reacts to indicators of malfunction; locates and implements corrections. • Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products and maintains proper records for quality control reports. • Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains instruments on which trained. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks and monitoring. Identifies the cause of common problems and makes simple repairs. • Evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system and accepted assay procedures; correlates quantitative data with patient data (i.e., history, medications) to verify results. • Performs additional tests to clarify or confirm abnormal patient results. Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them directly. • Responsible for the generation of laboratory results from the work area into the laboratory computer system. • Edits and verifies results recorded into the computer system. • Perform validation studies on various equipment in the department. • Stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the work area. • Performs patient specimen collection as needed i.e. phlebotomy. • Establishes and maintains effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with Patients, Families, and all other Medical Center Employees. • Provides general clerical and administrative support for the area • Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package.

Phlebotomist • Performs assigned tasks with minimal oversight. • Performs blood collection requiring knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanics of venipuncture and patient preparation. • Performs phlebotomy to obtain patient specimens for laboratory testing including blood cultures and compatibility samples. • Accession and receive samples into VA laboratory information system package for laboratory testing. • Accession and receive sample into VA laboratory information system package to send out for reference laboratory testing. • Instructs patients in proper collection of 24-hour urine and other samples collected at home. • Prepares collection, measure and record 24-hour urine volumes. • Transports specimens to the laboratory including those requiring special handling. ix. Looks up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient draws. x. Answers phone and direct calls to other laboratory sections. • Establishes and maintains effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with Patients, Families, and all other Medical Center Employees. • Provides general clerical and administrative support for the area. • Stocks and maintains specialized supplies used in the drawing area.

B.4 SPECIAL TASK ORDER REQUIREMENTS

  1. BUSINESS HOURS Clinical Laboratory is open 24-7. Outpatient Phlebotomy is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

3.1. WORK SCHEDULE

a. Medical Technologist normal work schedule will be 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, Monday – Friday. The shift will be from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., with a ½ hour unpaid lunch break.

b. Full-time Phlebotomist normal work schedule will be 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, Monday – Friday with rotating weekends. The shift will be from 5:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., with a ½ hour unpaid lunch break.

c. Part-time Phlebotomist normal work schedule will be 15 hours per week, 3 hours per day, Monday – Friday with rotating weekends. The shift will be from 5:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m., no breaks.

d. Overtime may be necessary for the Medical Technologist and full-time Phlebotomist and is applicable for anything over 40 hours in a one week pay period worked at the VA. Overtime must be pre-approved by the Lab Manager. The shifts include a mandatory ½ hour non- paid lunch break.

3.2 FEDERAL HOLIDAYS

Not required to provide services on Federal holidays.

The 11 holidays observed by the Federal Government are: New Year’s Day (January 1st), Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. (3rd Monday in January), Washington’s Birthday (3rd Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19th), Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day (1st Monday in September), Columbus Day (2nd Monday in October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday in November), Christmas Day (December 25th) and any other day specifically declared by the President of the United States to be a national holiday.

When one of the above designated legal holidays falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be observed as a legal holiday. When a legal holiday falls on a Saturday, the preceding Friday is observed as a holiday by U.S. Government agencies.
