The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties
Duration of Assignment:
Approximately 12 weeks starting June 2025.
Salary Information:
The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Transportation & Hydraulics Services (THS) Division, Roads & Bridges Section.
Salary ranges for this classification are:
- Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.32 - $21.88 per hour (unbenefited)
- Graduate Student Intern: $19.82 – $29.27 per hour (unbenefited)
These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.
About the THS Division, Roads & Bridges Section Internship:
The Roads & Bridges Section is responsible for delivering a wide variety of capital improvement projects, including federally funded and FEMA recovery projects.
The Roads & Bridges intern will be assigned to assist with the following projects: 10211 – Balbach Park Transportation Improvements, 10026 – Downtown Better Bikeways Hardscape Conversion-STPL-5005(169), 10464 – San Pedro Bollards Improvements, 10451 – Ocala Avenue Median Improvements-HSIPSL-5005(176), and 10453 – Tamien Transportation Improvements.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate Student Intern: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.
Graduate Student Intern: Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university.
Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.
Other Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable qualifications for this position include:
Enrolled as a Civil Engineering or Construction Management undergraduate/graduate student in an accredited college or university.
Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe, Bluebeam, and AutoDesk softwares.
Knowledge and ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules of quantities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Selection Process
