
Neuroscience Research Intern (Pack STEM, Four Square Clinicals, Summer '25)

Current Projects - Interns will have the chance to contribute to or observe:
- Launching integrated primary care services alongside mental health and SUD programs
- Expanding our evening IOP and group therapy offerings
- Developing a mobile outreach unit to serve rural and homeless populations
- Establishing research initiatives including neuromodulation and comparison of current treatments in partnership with UNR and local providers
- Building out a centralized care coordination system using Microsoft 365 and modern EHR platforms
- Planning and executing sober living transitions and Level 3 Residential Treatment pathways

Internship Description:
Four Square Clinicals is seeking a motivated and curious Neuroscience Research Intern to support our innovative brain-based care initiatives, including EEG-informed psychiatric treatment and personalized TMS (electromagnetic brain pulse/EMBP). This internship is ideal for students studying neuroscience, psychology, biology, or a related health science who are passionate about applying scientific knowledge to real-world mental health care.
As part of our research and innovation team, you’ll work alongside clinicians, researchers, and program staff to support exploratory research, literature reviews, client education materials, and potential pilot studies. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an applied neuropsychiatric setting, with direct exposure to the integration of neuroscience, behavioral health, and rural health innovation.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 360 hours of work as an intern (32-40 hours per week, 12 weeks total)
- Assist in collecting and organizing clinical research data related to:
- EEG-informed personalized TMS/EMBP treatments
- Psychiatric symptoms in TBI, depression, anxiety, or SUDs
- Client response patterns to neuropsychiatric interventions
- Conduct literature reviews on topics such as:
- EEG biomarkers in mental illness
- TMS efficacy and emerging brain-based interventions
- Integrated care models for rural or underserved populations
- Help develop educational materials or infographics explaining neuroscience concepts to clients and families
- Participate in coordination of IRB proposals or academic collaborations (e.g., UNR)
- Observe clinical workflow in TMS, medication management, and mental health assessments (if permitted)
- Support program evaluation by contributing to reports on patient outcomes and feasibility studies
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
Goals:
- Contribute to EEG-Informed Care Innovation: Assist in organizing, reviewing, and understanding neuroscience-based treatment methods to help inform clinical decision-making.
- Support Research Development: Provide foundational literature reviews, data organization, and documentation for future academic or clinical studies (e.g., EEG + EMBP).
- Bridge Science and Practice: Help translate complex neuroscience topics into accessible materials for clients, families, and providers.
- Build Research Experience in Applied Mental Health: Engage with clinical teams to learn how neuroscience intersects with behavioral health care delivery.
Expectations:
- Commit to 8–15 hours per week (flexible)
- Participate in team meetings related to research or treatment innovation
- Complete tasks independently while maintaining regular updates with your supervisor
- Maintain strict confidentiality and research ethics
- Submit a short literature review or research summary by the end of the internship
- Be curious, flexible, and collaborative with clinical and operations teams
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘25 semester
- Spring ‘25 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Pursuing coursework in Neuroscience, Psychology, Biology, or a related health science field
- Strong research and critical thinking skills
- Ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize scientific findings
- Interest in mental health, brain-based treatments, and/or integrated care models
- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework or lab experience related to EEG, TMS, neuroanatomy, or psychopharmacology
- Familiarity with academic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar) and research tools (Zotero, Mendeley)
- Experience writing research summaries, abstracts, or educational materials
- Comfort communicating scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences
- Experience with Excel, data tables, or basic statistical analysis (SPSS, R, or Python a plus)
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Time Commitment:
- 32- 40 hours per week, with optional increased hours during peak project phases
- Preferred Duration: 12–20 weeks (depending on project or research goals)
Suggested Weekly Schedule:
- 4 - 5 workdays per week, ideally overlapping with clinical or research staff availability
- Flexible scheduling between 9 AM – 6 PM, with possibility of some remote work (e.g., for literature review or writing)
- On-site hours may be preferred for clinical observation or EEG-related work (if applicable)
Important - Should be available for:
- Team or supervision meetings (weekly or biweekly)
- Occasional case review or research coordination sessions
- Final schedule will be customized during onboarding to align with active projects
Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 360 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
