Upward Bound Programs Intern (PIGP, Upward Bound, Summer '25)

**This internship is hosted by UNR Upward Bound and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN.

About UNR Upward Bound: 

With 58 years of success, the Upward Bound Classic & Math Science Programs (UB/UBMS) at the University of Nevada, Reno provide first-generation, low-income students with free academic services and support to develop the skills, knowledge, and motivation essential to be successful in high school and admission, persistence, and completion of postsecondary education. UB/UBMS serves a total of 246 underrepresented high school students in Washoe and Lyon County. Services include but are not limited to: consistent academic support and advisement, tutoring, literacy and writing support, ACT/SAT preparation, college preparatory workshops, personal and leadership development, financial literacy, career internships, civic engagement, college tours, summer academies, and service learning. UB/UBMS is dedicated to providing a comprehensive and enriching educational experience that prepares underrepresented students for success in life, college and beyond. Our program is designed to equip students with the academic skills, leadership, professional development, critical thinking abilities, and personal qualities necessary to excel in higher education and thrive in their future careers. 

 

Internship Description: 

The Upward Bound Programs Intern will play a vital role in supporting the summer components of the TRIO Upward Bound Programs, assisting with student engagement, program logistics, and recruitment efforts. This position is ideal for students interested in working with youth, education, social work, student services, or community outreach. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in planning and executing summer programming for first-generation high school students, including workshops, field trips, and college-prep activities 
  • Support recruitment efforts by conducting outreach to applicants, engaging with prospective students, and assisting with application processing 
  • Provide logistical support for events, including setup/cleanup, check-in, and coordination of materials 
  • Assist in tracking student participation and maintaining accurate records 
  • Act as a mentor and resource for students participating in summer programs 
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of the Upward Bound program 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (20 hours per week minimum, 6 weeks total) 
  • In accordance with NACE Career Readiness Competencies, each intern will be expected to:

    • As official representatives of UB/UBMS, all interns must abide by all provisions of the UNR student code of conduct, UB/UBMS Handbook, and UB/UBMS policies and procedures 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘25 semester 
  • Students who’ve graduated Spring 2025 or earlier are not eligible for this position 
  • Strong interest in working with teens, education, student affairs, or community engagement 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Reliable, proactive, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with high school students or in an educational setting. 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern:  

The UB/UBMS office is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Ideally, the Upward Bound Programs Intern will work 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, but will be able to choose their own schedules long as it aligns within the hours of operation. Occasionally, special events, presentations and workshops may be hosted in the evening and/or weekends. Interns will adjust their weekly schedule to accommodate such circumstances. 

 

PIGP internships require interns to complete a minimum of 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
