
Writer and Digital Content Intern (PIGP, UNR at Lake Tahoe, Summer '25)

The University of Nevada's Lake Tahoe campus is a vibrant and breathtaking location where art, science, and the environment meet. During the summer the campus hosts Classical Tahoe, a concert and musical education series, as well as multiple events for the local community. Regional radio station KUNR will also be present with their studio on campus this summer, making for a great way to interact with local reporting, audio journalism, and podcasting.
Internship Description:
The University of Nevada is seeking a motivated and talented student writer with a passion for storytelling to join the communications team for the Office of the Provost. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience in journalism and communications, building a portfolio of published work, including articles, photographs, and design pieces.
The student worker will cover campus events and initiatives at both the main campus and the UNR at Lake Tahoe campus for Nevada Today, UNR’s publication for students, staff, and the local community. This position also includes graphic design responsibilities, where the student will create promotional materials, such as brochures and digital graphics, to support various university communications.
All student interns will be provided housing on the Tahoe campus for the duration of their summer internship.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Research and write news stories, feature articles, and other editorial content for Nevada Today covering campus events, initiatives, and other university-related topics
- Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, and other sources, ensuring accuracy and depth in reporting
- Capture and edit photographs or short-form videos as needed to accompany stories
- Design visual assets, including brochures, social media graphics, and event promotions, adhering to university brand guidelines
- Coordinate with the communications team to support broader messaging and strategic communications efforts
- Adhere to AP Style and university editorial standards in all written content
- Meet weekly deadlines, ensuring timely publication and responsiveness to current campus events
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete a minimum of 240 hours of work as an intern (20 hours per week minimum, 12 weeks total)
- Interview and write articles
- Take photos to accompany articles
- Work with video/photo intern to create multimedia piece
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘25 semester
- Students who’ve graduated Spring 2025 or earlier are not eligible for this position
- Proficient in InDesign, social media
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong interviewing, reporting, and narrative writing skills, with demonstrated ability to meet journalistic standards
- Proficiency in AP Style and experience in news writing
- Experience in graphic design, with a strong portfolio showcasing work in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or similar design software
- Familiarity with photography and basic video production skills
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently
- Interest in communications, strategic messaging, and integrated marketing
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Applicants must be able to work between 10-4pm at least three days per week and occasionally on weekends as events take place or interview subject schedules dictate.
PIGP internships require interns to complete a minimum of 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
