PBS Reno Writers Contest Intern (PBS Reno, Pack Intern, Spring '27)
**This internship is hosted by Channel 5 Public Broadcasting, INC. and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN.
Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15 minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30-minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers.
After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

Internship Description:
PBS Reno’s Education Department provides hands-on education workshops in classrooms and community organizations across northern Nevada. This department operates the robust Curiosity Classroom education program, which holds educational workshops in classrooms throughout the year and coordinates an annual PBS Reno Writers Contest. The Writers Contest continues to grow each year. In 2026, PBS Reno received 2,638 story entries.
The PBS Reno Writers Contest Intern will assist primarily with duties related to the Writers Contest. Some responsibilities may include setting up spreadsheets to organize details related to the contest; sending professional emails to teachers and parents about the contest; and picking up and dropping off stories at schools (intern must have a valid driver’s license, car, and excellent driving record, intern will be reimbursed for mileage); reading and recording entries; communicating information to the Vice President and Director of Education. When the intern is not working on tasks related to the Writers Contest, they will help restock Curiosity Classroom supplies, professionally and respectfully represent PBS Reno at community events, have the opportunity to learn about other PBS Reno departments, and complete other tasks as assigned by the Intern Supervisor.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- The PBS Reno Writers Contest Education Intern will assist primarily with duties related to the PBS Reno Writers Contest. Some responsibilities may include:
- Setting up spreadsheets to organize details related to the contest.
- Sending professional emails to teachers and parents about the contest.
- Picking up and dropping off stories at local schools.
- Reading and recording entries.
- Communicating information to the Vice President and Director of Education.
- Other duties as assigned may include:
- Re-stocking Curiosity Classroom supplies.
- Professionally and respectfully represent PBS Reno at Community events.
- Opportunity to learn about other PBS Reno departments.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Keep clear and precise records of story entries.
- Grow as a professional and as part of a dynamic team.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers as well as teachers and community members.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester
- December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program
- Must have a valid driver’s license, car, and an excellent driving record.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Shows initiative and can be self-directed when supervisors are not available.
- Attention to detail.
- Able to multitask and handle multiple responsibilities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Available to work during Spring Break.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Applicants must be available to work 8-10 hours each week during normal business hours, 9:00am-5:00pm. Applicants are strongly encouraged to be available during Spring Break (3/21/2026 – 3/29/2026).
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
