Research Assistant Intern (UNR Extension - Las Vegas, Pack Intern, Spring '27)
**This internship is hosted by University of Nevada Reno Extension and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN.
Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15 minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30- minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers.
After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

Internship Description:
As a Research Assistant Intern at UNR Extension, your primary responsibilities will include assisting with program development by collaborating with program leaders to create, implement, and evaluate educational initiatives that address community needs in areas like health, and nutrition sustainability.
The University of Nevada, Reno Extension emphasizes collaboration, innovation and helping the local communities in each county. The interns will have the opportunity to work on impactful and sustainable health related projects that address the needs of the community ranging from healthy youth development, aging, and interventions to combat obesity. Interns at University of Reno, Extension will be in an inclusive environment where they can apply their knowledge from class to real-world settings like community outreach.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct research by gathering data, preparing surveys, and analyzing community needs
- Participate in events and outreach activities
- Assist in the development of educational materials to promote programs
- Support program scheduling, records management, and data entry
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Focus on building a comprehensive understanding of UNR Extension’s mission and its services, gaining hands-on experience in program development and community outreach, and acquiring valuable skills relevant to public health and education.
- Establish strong community relationships while enhancing their analytical and communication skills through active participation in the development and evaluation of educational initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester
- December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in an academic program related to public health, education, social sciences, or a related field.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, basic computer proficiency, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with community outreach principles
- Prior experience in program development or research
- Strong interest in health, nutrition, wellness, or environmental issues
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Interns are expected to commit to a schedule of 8-15 hours per week, with flexible hours to accommodate their academic commitments. The internship will be conducted in a hybrid format, requiring both in-person participation for community events and remote work for research and administrative tasks.
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
