Accounting & Finance Intern — Part-Time Fall Internship

Position Summary

Are you organized, detail-oriented, and interested in learning how the financial side of a nonprofit works?

The Discovery Museum is seeking a paid, part-time Accounting & Finance Intern for the Fall semester. This position reports to the Finance Director and provides a hands-on opportunity to gain experience with nonprofit accounting, financial recordkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, daily revenue, deposits, and financial reporting.

This is a great opportunity for a student interested in accounting, finance, business, or nonprofit management who wants to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world environment.

You’ll work with financial information that helps keep the Discovery Museum running smoothly—from daily admissions and sales to vendor invoices and monthly financial activities.

What You’ll Do

Daily Revenue & Cash Support

  • Run daily revenue reports from the museum’s POS system, Altru.
  • Assist with preparing daily deposits and delivering deposits to the bank as needed.
  • Enter daily cash receipts into QuickBooks.
  • Coordinate with Visitor Services to receive and reconcile daily cash collections.
  • Organize and file completed deposit documentation.
  • Help ensure daily revenue records are accurate and complete.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Enter vendor invoices into QuickBooks.
  • Assist with organizing and processing invoices.
  • Help prepare weekly vendor payments.
  • Maintain organized financial records and files.
  • Assist with tracking accounts payable and receivable activity.

Month-End & Financial Support

  • Assist with reviewing vendor activity to ensure monthly invoices have been received and processed.
  • Help organize information needed for month-end close.
  • Assist with financial reports and other accounting-related projects.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

We are looking for a student who is dependable, curious, and eager to learn.

  • Interest in accounting, finance, business, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle financial information with discretion and confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working with numbers and learning financial systems.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Willingness to learn QuickBooks and Altru.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to make occasional bank deposits, as needed.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
  • Previous experience with Excel, QuickBooks, or other financial software.
  • Previous administrative, office, customer service, or cash-handling experience.
  • Familiarity with basic accounting concepts or GAAP is a plus, but not required.
