About Connected Future Labs:
Connected Future Labs is an agile data science consulting company that engages in a variety of activities. Our previous work can be found in the Meta Neural Band, in Galea (a VR headset), and with KLAB 4 Recovery, a lab that develops cutting-edge rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries and stroke recovery.
Connected Future Labs is also the creator of biometric wearable EmotiBit. It provides high-quality, multimodal, open-source biometric sensing to researchers, educators, artists, and enthusiasts of DIY and personal health. EmotiBit launched in 2021 and has enabled work in over 100 publications and countless other creative and business ventures.
Internship Description:
The software engineering intern will be part of a small team developing a wearable biometric sensor called EmotiBit (https://www.emotibit.com/). EmotiBit launched in 2021, ranking in the top 2% of all-time Kickstarter campaigns and has been growing rapidly since. Sold in over 50 countries around the globe, EmotiBit is being used at NASA, Apple, MIT, Nike, Samsung and other Fortune 500 companies, startups and education institutions worldwide.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 150 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
The intern will work with Connected Future Labs to identify a project that is a good fit for the intern's interests and experience.
This work could include:
- Collecting and analyzing data
- Creating a data science portal
- Exploring new applications for biometric data and other possibilities.
- Example projects include examining sleep, exercise or stress patterns and developing data science algorithms and machine learning classifiers to help people live better lives.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Critical Thinking: Asking critical questions that distinguish between different engineering paths.
- Leadership: Taking initiative and ownership of project progress and seeking appropriately scoped opportunities to improve the ecosystem in which the project exists.
- Technology: Quickly learn how to use new technologies and make judgements about when to dive deep and when to dive shallow into different facets.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Fall ‘26 semester
- Summer ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Student must be enrolled in a major or minor program in the following colleges:
- Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR)
- Business
- Engineering
- Science
- Public Health/Orvis
- The intern that we'd love to talk to is a life-long learner
- Adept at critical thinking
- Wants to dive into learning new skills and tackle challenging problems to make the world a better place.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would have experience in some or all of the following:
- Biomedical sensing
- DSP and bio-signal algorithms
- Machine learning
- Python, C++, Android, Git
- Firmware development
- KiCad PCB software
- PCB fab and assembly
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Applicants should be available to work during business hours M-F, 9-5.
Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 150 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
