Essential Functions

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individual within this classification. The Graduate Assistant of Fitness/Wellness Programs at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) learn, practice and develop skills that will lead to becoming an excellent candidate for a career in recreation. This role will assist in the leadership of Fitness and Wellness programs. Applicants must have experience and knowledge in Wellness Programming and at least one of the following areas: management of weight room employees and equipment, Personal Training, and/or Group Fitness, with willingness to learn skills in other areas. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to gain experience in other areas of interest. Graduate Assistants will receive a monthly stipend and will work an average of 20 hours/week while being enrolled in a Graduate Program at UNO.

Open Recreation/Weight Room

Maintain a safe, welcoming environment for a diverse group of participants. Enforce facility and University policies. Identify and report maintenance needs, ensuring general upkeep of facilities. Make recommendations regarding policies, regulations, and operating procedures. Assist with supervision of weight room student staff. Take lead on hiring and training of Weight Room Supervisors.

Wellness
Assist with the development, implementation, and promotion of wellness programs. Assist with the massage therapy program. Complete other duties as assigned.

In addition to assisting with the oversight of the weight room and helping with wellness programs, the successful candidate must have the ability to provide leadership to one of the following and a willingness to learn and develop in other areas of recreation is required.

Personal Training

Working knowledge of safe fitness practices including free weight equipment, select weight equipment, plate-loaded, and cardiovascular equipment. Train clients as assigned. Assist in the hiring and training of new student employees. Develop in-service meetings for trainers. Recruit clients for Personal Training.

Group Fitness

Promote the Group Fitness program, as well as teach, to a diverse population. Recruit, hire and train new instructors for a variety of formats including Dance, Strength, Circuit, Cycling and more. Maintain a safe, clean environment for participants. Develop in-service meetings for Instructors. z

  • Assist with the supervision, administration, planning, promoting and expansion of the Fitness and Wellness programs.
  • Management and development of student staff. Including recruiting, hiring and training staff to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Collaborate with Campus Partners to create unique offerings and attract new participants to programs.
  • Create and compile program specific reports.
  • Coordinate and implement wellness programs for the campus community.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule

Varies and can include mornings, afternoon and/or evenings as well as potentially weekends.

Other duties related to your appointment may be assigned in the course of your employment.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in related field or extensive experience in Campus Recreation.
  • Acceptance in a University of Nebraska at Omaha degree program.
  • Desire to mentor and collaborate with students.
  • Previous Campus Recreation leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Experience in staff development and event/program planning.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills.
  • CPR/AED & First Aid certification.



 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have at least one current and nationally accredited group fitness instructor and/or personal training certification by the start date.
  • Personal Training experience and/or experience teaching a variety of Group Fitness classes.

Salary

$1,708.16/month plus tuition
