Development & Community Platform Intern (The Nest, Pack Intern, Summer 2026)

About The Nest: 

The Nest is a sustainability‑driven vintage boutique and creative community hub founded in Reno in 2009. What began as a small shop built on a love of craftsmanship, history, and reuse has grown into a space where people come not just to shop, but to discover stories, creativity, and community. 

  

Alongside the physical shop, The Nest continues to grow its online presence through social media, storytelling, and creative marketing. Interns have the opportunity to work directly with the owner and contribute ideas in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment. 

 

About Check Local First 

Check Local First is a community initiative focused on helping people discover and support independent businesses through a digital platform and local business network. 

  

The project is rooted in the belief that strong local economies depend on strong local connections. This internship offers the opportunity to participate in the early stages of building a mission‑driven startup from the ground up. 

 

Internship Description: 

This internship provides hands‑on experience in startup development, website strategy, and community engagement. The intern will work with the founder to help shape the early stages of the Check Local First platform while gaining insight into how new initiatives grow and evolve. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Complete 360 hours of work as an intern (32-40 hours per week, 9 weeks minimum) 
  • Support development of the Check Local First website and digital directory 
  • Research and build listings of local businesses 
  • Assist with social media strategy and storytelling for the project 
  • Conduct outreach to local businesses and community partners 
  • Collaborate with a web developer to test and refine platform features 
  • Research SEO strategies and digital discoverability 
  • Present insights and recommendations for platform growth 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

These internships offer hands-on experience working inside a small, entrepreneurial business environment. Interns will collaborate directly with the owner on real projects involving digital marketing, e‑commerce, analytics, and startup development. Students are encouraged to bring curiosity, ideas, and a willingness to experiment while developing practical skills that extend beyond the classroom. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘26 semester  
  • Spring ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program 
  • Student must be enrolled in a major or minor program in the following colleges: 
    • Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR) 
    • Business 
    • Engineering 
    • Science 
    • Public Health/Orvis 
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Interest in marketing, social media, entrepreneurship, and community development 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Interest in entrepreneurship, community building, and small business 
  • Experience with website tools or digital research 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern: 

32–40 hours per week during business hours. Intern must complete 360 total hours. during shop hours, typically between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. 

 

Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 360 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
