We provide geotechnical engineering; construction quality assurance and quality control inspection; construction special inspection; materials testing; and specialized civil engineering design for municipal, industrial, commercial, and residential clients.
Internship Description:
The Engineering Intern performs engineering and geologic analyses related to foundation design, retaining wall design, slope stability, geologic hazards evaluation, geologic research, site grading, drainage, surface hydrology, water supply, and onsite disposal, shoreline protection, materials engineering, forensic investigations, etc.
The Engineering Intern may perform or assists in geotechnical field investigations including monitoring/observing test drilling and sampling; logging test borings, and test pits; level surveys; seismic surveys, pile driving monitoring; tieback and soil nail testing; and preparing field reports summarizing geotechnical field activities and site descriptions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 360 hours of work as an intern (32-40 hours per week, 9 weeks minimum)
- Work on diverse projects including private, commercial, industrial, and public works as described below.
- Participate in a variety of projects which include civil; geotechnical investigation; design/plan preparation; permitting; and construction.
- Prepare accurate and professional civil engineering drawings for: grading; storm water management; utilities; retaining walls; and septic design per Project Engineer’s specifications.
- Perform specialized engineering analysis related to: foundation; wall design; and slope stability; site grading; drainage; surface hydrology; water supply; onsite disposal; shoreline protection; and materials engineering.
- Prepare civil site development plans to meet City and County standards for residential and small commercial grading and construction projects which include engineering design of grading, utilities, drainage and BMP’s; scheduling of work and deliverables; and preparation of plans and specs.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Ability to follow specifications and perform calculations to create technical drawings and details.
- Possesses a good understanding of engineering and design principles, methods, and techniques with exposure to a variety of projects which include civil design.
- Ability to perform civil engineering-related evaluation and design.
- Possesses initiative, resourcefulness and motivation in resolving site preparation and engineering design problems.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work in a team environment on various projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘26 semester
- Spring ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Student must be enrolled in a major or minor program in the following colleges:
- Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR)
- Business
- Engineering
- Science
- Public Health/Orvis
- Coursework in Civil Engineering or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in latest versions of AutoCAD and experience in Civil 3D or desire to expand knowledge
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Applicants are requested to be available during office hours from 8am to 5pm.
Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 360 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
