Software Development Intern (GeoNeo, Pack STEM, Spring 2026)

Internship Description: 

GeoNeo is a Reno based geospatial software company working with modern web technologies, cloud systems, mapping tools, and high-resolution imagery. We are seeking a motivated Software Development Intern who wants hands-on experience with real engineering projects that blend React, Python, Azure Cloud, and geospatial data. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Complete 150 hours of work as an intern (10-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total) 
  • Build front-end features using React.js and TypeScript 
  • Develop FastAPI Python services with PostgreSQL 
  • Work with Azure tools including Container Apps, Service Bus, and Blob Storage 
  • Implement mapping features with Mapbox GL JS and PostGIS 
  • Support Docker based deployments and Terraform infrastructure 
  • Write unit tests and help improve CI and CD workflows 
  • Work with raster and vector geospatial data and real imagery APIs 
  • Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code to accelerate development  

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Gain hands-on experience with modern software development using React, Python, and cloud technologies 
  • Learn to build and test real application features that support geospatial and mapping workflows 
  • Strengthen technical skills in areas such as REST APIs, PostgreSQL, Docker, and Azure Cloud services 
  • Develop familiarity with geospatial data and mapping tools including Mapbox GL JS and PostGIS 
  • Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code to support faster development and debugging 
  • Practice writing clean, maintainable code with unit and integration tests 
  • Participate in code reviews, follow team development practices, and communicate progress clearly 
  • Ask questions when challenges arise and show a willingness to learn new tools and concepts 
  • Meet weekly expectations of 10 to 15 work hours and complete assigned tasks on time 
  • Demonstrate initiative by contributing ideas that improve workflow, code quality, or project outcomes 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester 
  • Fall ‘25 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program 
  • Student must be enrolled in a major or minor program in the following colleges: 
    • Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR) 
    • Business 
    • Engineering 
    • Science 
    • Public Health/Orvis 
  • Must be a US Citizen due to requirements of GeoNeo’s government contracts 
  • Interest in cloud computing, mapping, or geospatial applications 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn 
  • Experience with at least two of the following:  
  • Python 
  • JavaScript or TypeScript 
  • React or similar front-end framework 
  • SQL databases 
  • Git and collaborative development 

  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with FastAPI, async Python, containers, or Azure Cloud 
  • Familiarity with Mapbox, GIS concepts, or spatial databases 
  • Understanding of CI and CD workflows, GitHub Actions, or automated testing 
  • Exposure to image processing or computer vision topics 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern: 

  • 10 to 15 hours per week 
  • Work at the UNR Innevation Center during weekday hours between 8 and 4 
  • Occasional support for special events outside normal hours 

 

Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 150 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
