Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer

The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region, Law Enforcement and Investigations (LEI) staff will soon be advertising multiple GL-1801-5/7/9 law enforcement officer positions.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The incumbent of the position will be responsible for performing full-time law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, detention, and prosecution activities associated with the enforcement of the laws and regulations relating to National Forest System lands and resources. The individual selected is required to qualify with and carry defensive equipment, including firearms, and is subject to random drug testing. The position is subject to pre-employment drug screening and subject to random drug testing, compliance with physical fitness requirements, and satisfactory results on a pre-employment Single Scope Background Investigation; the position is designated as high risk.
This is a primary law enforcement position under 5 USC 834(c) (CSRS) and 8412(d) (FERS). It is a non-supervisory position and is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Individuals making their first entry into a law enforcement position under these authorities cannot be selected/appointed if they have reached age 37. Individuals already in covered positions or with previous approved service who apply for a primary position cannot be considered if their age at re-entry into the primary position is 37, after subtracting service in approved position(s).
The incumbent must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9). The individual selected must successfully complete, or have completed, the Land Management Police Training (LMPT) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glynco, GA, or equivalent basic police officer training. In addition, the incumbent must successfully complete a 12-week Field Training course immediately following basic training and the FLETC Drug Enforcement Training Program (DETP).
If the position is filled at the GL-05 level, the incumbent may be promoted to the GL-07 without further competition upon satisfactory performance for one year. There is no promotion potential for this position beyond the GL-09 level.
