Internship Description:
The Sustainability and Data Analysis Intern will support the Green Business Program Coordinator on our energy rebate program. Focusing on enhancing sustainability practices for small to medium businesses of any sector. In this role, the intern will analyze data outcomes from energy rebates that small businesses receive from a green business grant program. They would calculate greenhouse gas emissions reduced, kWh of energy saved, reduction of therms from rebates received for LED lighting upgrades, lighting controls, energy efficient appliances, smart thermostats, insulation and more. They will help with the application verification, collect verification that businesses have completed the project and calculate and verify environmental outcomes described above.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Green business certification: Assist Green Business Coordinator with green business certification. Learn how to use GreenBizTracker to engage businesses and to collect and analyze data to calculate greenhouse gas emissions.
- Project Management: Shadow supervisor through a green business certification process and learn what's involved in providing technical assistance to businesses. Follow-up with businesses during the certification process.
- Data Collection & Analysis: analyze data from energy efficiencies resulting from rebates given to small businesses in Nevada.
- Interpret findings to inform environmental outcomes from project.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
Develop Sustainability Knowledge:
Goal: gain an understating of waste management and sustainability practices that can improve a business's environmental performance Expectation: Interns are expected to actively participate in assessing sustainability metrics and propose ways business can enhance their sustainability practices
Project Management Proficiency:
Goal: build project management skills by shadowing and eventually managing their own green business certification project Expectation: Interns should demonstrate leadership by coordinating with business staff by overseeing green business certification, offering recommendations, and ensuring project is completed on time and according to plan
Collect and Analyze Data to Determine GHG Emission:
Goal: analyze information collected for energy projects funded by our rebate program and calculate dollar savings, water saving, reduction is solid waste and hazardous waste, and use approved GHG calculators to convert into GHG reduction. Expectations: Interns should demonstrate proficiency in research methods, be proactive in overcoming challenges in data collection and provide meaningful insights from survey results
Strengthen Client Engagement Skills:
Goal: Develop strong communication and stakeholder management skills by interacting with business owners and managers during green certification process Expectation: Interns are expected to professionally engage with business staff, demonstration effective communication, problem-solving and relationship building abilities
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester
- Fall ‘25 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Interest in sustainability, willingness to collaborate with greenUP! and staff.
- Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to coordinate projects and prioritize tasks.
- Team player is a must.
- Must have proficiency in using excel to analyze data and calculate results.
- Good communication skills both verbally and utilizing word, excel and PowerPoint.
- Have taken or are taking statics.
- Good writing and analytic skill.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in sustainability projects, research or public-facing roles is beneficial but not required. A strong interest and willingness to learn is key.
- Spanish speaking would be helpful but not required.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
- Schedule is flexible as long as student can demonstrate work. A time record must be kept.
- Weekly meeting with supervisor during standard work hours (9am to 5pm).
- Will work with supervisor to develop a weekly work schedule and project timeline.
Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
