Internship Description:
The Software Development Intern at Sky Fiber Internet will work directly with our engineering and operations teams to support the design, development, and optimization of internal software tools and web-based systems that enhance network performance, customer management, and workflow automation. The intern will assist in coding, testing, debugging, and documenting applications, as well as integrating APIs and supporting data-driven decision-making through software solutions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 150 hours of work as an intern (10-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Assist in the design, development, testing, and deployment of internal software tools and web applications used for network operations and customer management.
- Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code under the supervision of Sky Fiber’s engineering team.
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize existing applications and scripts.
- Support integration of third-party APIs and automation systems to improve internal workflows.
- Participate in regular code reviews and sprint meetings to learn best practices in software development and agile methodologies.
- Maintain and update technical documentation related to software systems, databases, and internal tools.
- Assist in data collection and analysis projects that support decision-making and service optimization.
- Communicate progress effectively with mentors and team members while meeting established deadlines.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Gain practical experience in full-stack software development, including front-end and back-end programming.
- Understand and apply agile development processes such as sprint planning, version control, and collaborative coding practices.
- Develop problem-solving and analytical skills by working on real-world projects that improve automation and efficiency within the company.
- Strengthen communication and teamwork skills through active collaboration with cross-functional departments.
- Demonstrate professional growth by independently managing assigned tasks, meeting deadlines, and producing high-quality, well-documented work.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester
- Fall ‘25 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Foundational knowledge of programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Familiarity with web development frameworks (React, Node.js, or similar) and version control systems like Git/GitHub.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid team environment.
- Reliable internet connection and time management skills to meet project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- System administrative experience.
- Experience with modern web development frameworks such as Reacts.
- Familiarity with back-end technologies like Node.js, Django, or Flask.
- Understanding of database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB).
- Experience with API development and integration.
- Basic understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
- Knowledge of UI/UX principles and responsive web design.
- Previous internship or project experience in software or web development.
- Interest in applying technology to improve connectivity, automation, and user experience within the telecommunications industry.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Sky Fiber Internet is flexible and will work with the student’s academic schedule. We anticipate the Software Development Intern will work 10–15 hours per week during the semester, with potential for additional hours during academic breaks if desired.
Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 150 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
