UNR Center for Basque Studies Press
About UNR Center for Basque Studies Press:
The Center for Basque Studies Press is the preeminent publisher of English-language books concerning language acquisition, history, culture, and interdisciplinary Basque Studies. Working with our publishing partner Longleaf, our editorial board, dedicated staff, and a handful of freelancers, the CBS Press publishes 6-10 texts a year. We offer a range of opportunities to interns preparing for careers in publishing production, editing, copywriting, design, project management, and marketing (web and social media).
Internship Description:
The Publishing Intern will support our Publications manager (working with the Interim Director of the Center) and would get exposure to a range of skills and jobs that may include data import, export and management, managing submissions, correspondence with authors, editing, and project management. If appropriate, they may be invited to attend meetings with our publishing partner, Longleaf, and to editorial board meetings to learn how the intellectual and material aspects of the publishing industry come together. They may also be asked to write and edit catalog copy that will then be added to our evolving website.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Contribute to project management of production calendar
- Verify and update sales and inventory (as necessary)
- Write and edit catalog copy for catalog, newsletter, and website updates
- Attend meetings of various committees and constituencies (as appropriate)
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- We are happy to work with interns on their own goals and will try to assign tasks that expose them to a range of tasks and processes to further their knowledge of the publishing industry while still enabling them to do interesting, rewarding jobs. Realistically, however, some required tasks may not be technical rather than creative or intellectual.
- We expect interns to show up regularly and follow through on tasks with an appropriate level of self-motivation and professionalism. In return, we will actively and supportively supervise interns to make sure they have clear assignments with assessable outcomes.
- We will also work with interns to document their achievements and training on their CV and in a career portfolio as part of their job.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester
- Strong writing and communication skills and attention to detail.
- Curiosity about Basque culture and academic publishing.
- Ability to work well with others and receive and act on critical inputs in a timely manner.
- Motivation, curiosity, and interest in publishing as a field; documentation of one's work; ability to deliver on deadlines.
- Familiarity with Microsoft suite and online web tools desired.
- Desire to learn new skills, including technical skills that may require interacting with data visualization tools, inventory systems, and "cataloguing" of publications via ISBN number.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on publications or in publishing.
- Demonstrated familiarity with data visualization, and/or web design/updates, and/or project management and/or admin support or communications experiences.
- Some level of comprehension or fluency in Spanish and/or Basque language.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
This position will average 8 -10 hours per week for a total of approx. 100 hours. The variety of tasks associated with the position will require that some may be done on site and in person (Center for Basque Studies at UNR) but some tasks can be done off-site. The successful candidate will need to be available for some onsite hours to be scheduled M-Th between 9-5; those hours can vary and we are happy to accommodate course schedules.
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
