GIS Intern (UNR Environmental Health & Safety, Pack Intern, Spring 2026)

About UNR Environmental Health & Safety: 

UNR's  Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is all about safety and ensuring the wellbeing of all members and guests of our community. As soon as you step on a UNR property, we want to ensure that you stay as safe as possible and if an accident were to occur, we do everything we can to get the individual the support/help that they need. To accomplish this, we collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure this happens. From a geospatial perspective, we're responsible for the upkeep and installation of all egress maps, the management of all emergency-related spatial data, including, extinguishers, AEDs, eyewashes, utility shutoffs, etc., coordinating with UPD on campus-wide initiatives to improve the safety of campus, developing various web applications for data collection and metrics, and creating any hardcopy figures needed by our various stakeholders. 

 

Internship Description: 

The GIS intern will support our Senior GIS Analyst through their taking over the campus-wide egress map initiative, which includes fieldwork, data management, data collections, and the coordination with the various departments across the various campuses. Although updating, generating, and installing egress maps would be the primary role, the opportunity will be there for additional opportunities in scripting, web app design, and web-based GIS. Communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are key. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Data management of building specific data 
  • Data collection using data collection app 
  • Update and export egress maps 
  • Install egress maps 
  • Perform data updates as necessary 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total) 
  • It's expected that the intern will be able to perform the required tasks following initial training and they will communicate any concerns, issues, or roadblocks they encounter during their tasks.  
  • The desired goals are that all buildings on main campus will have updated, and accurate egress maps installed upon completion. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester 
  • Experience with ArcGIS 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with data collection apps, experience with SQL Server, knowledge of query languages 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern:  

  • Applicant must be able to work during office hours, M-F 8-5, with a minimum of 2 hrs per shift. 

 

PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
