Internship Description:
The E Environmental Services - Sustainability Intern will support high-priority city initiatives that connect public health, sustainability, and community awareness. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in public administration, environmental policy, and digital storytelling while making a direct impact on the Reno community. They will assist with the Opioid funds grant program to local organizations, the energy and water benchmarking program, and create a pipeline of blogs/stories to share on social media.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist with the City’s opioid settlement funds distribution program, including tracking applications, supporting outreach to community organizations, and monitoring compliance with reporting requirements.
- Contribute to the energy and water benchmarking program by collecting, analyzing, and organizing data, as well as helping prepare reports and educational materials for property owners and stakeholders.
- Research, draft, and publish at least six months of blog posts and community stories highlighting sustainability, resilience, and community health initiatives.
- Support public engagement activities, including preparing presentations, graphics, and social media content.
- Perform additional project-related tasks as needed to support the Environmental Services division
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Gain experience in program administration, community engagement, and environmental policy implementation
- Deliver high-quality, professional written content that communicates complex issues in an accessible and engaging way
- Contribute to measurable progress in key city initiatives, including opioid settlement fund distribution and benchmarking program participation
- Demonstrate initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘26 semester
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort learning new digital tools (experience with data visualization or content management systems is a plus).
- Commitment to public service and interest in environmental and community health issues.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Coursework in public policy, environmental science, communications, public health, or a related field.
- Experience in writing materials used for public communication, experience in public health or sustainability programs.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
- Hybrid schedule. Can accommodate school schedule.
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
