Position Summary
The Volunteer Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting NNLC’s mission to empower individuals and families through literacy. This position is responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers who support NNLC’s programs, classrooms, events, and administrative needs. The Volunteer Coordinator will foster strong relationships with community members and partners, ensuring that volunteers are engaged, valued, and effectively matched to roles that enhance NNLC’s impact.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment & Outreach
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit volunteers from the community, local businesses, colleges/universities, and civic organizations.
- Represent NNLC at community events, fairs, and outreach opportunities to promote volunteer engagement.
Volunteer Onboarding & Training
- Coordinate orientation sessions for new volunteers, introducing them to NNLC’s mission, programs, and expectations.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities for volunteers, ensuring alignment with program needs (Adult Basic Education, English Language Acquisition, YouthBuild, Family Reading Program, etc.).
Volunteer Engagement & Retention
- Maintain regular communication with volunteers to recognize contributions, address concerns, and encourage long-term involvement.
- Develop recognition programs (e.g., appreciation events, certificates, spotlight features) to celebrate volunteer achievements.
Program Support & Coordination
- Collaborate with program managers and instructors to identify volunteer needs and match individuals with appropriate opportunities.
- Track volunteer schedules, hours, and placements to ensure adequate support across NNLC programs.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate volunteer records using NNLC’s database systems.
- Prepare reports on volunteer recruitment, retention, and impact for leadership, funders, and the Board of Directors.
- Ensure compliance with NNLC’s policies and procedures, including background checks when required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, nonprofit management, human services, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in volunteer management, community engagement, or program coordination preferred.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with diverse groups of people.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with volunteer management software or databases preferred.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for events or outreach activities.
