The State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Water Quality has an opening for a Research Data Specialist II to join a dynamic team environment in the Recycled Water and Desalination Unit. We are seeking a talented data scientist with strong critical thinking skills to support the team in protecting water quality consistent with the State Water Board’s direction and mission.

You will lead data-driven efforts to advance the use of recycled water statewide for all Californians while ensuring water quality is protected. You will support implementation of the Water Quality Control Policy for Recycled Water, which is a statewide policy to streamline the permitting of recycled water projects in a manner that protects the environment and public health as one piece of a broader strategy to mitigate the effects of long-term drought, climate change, and water supply uncertainty. You will serve as a resource to the unit for statistical analysis, data science, and quality assurance.

This is a hybrid position. The office is located at 1001 I Street, 15th Floor, Sacramento, right in the heart of downtown next to light rail stations and other public transportation. Occasional travel is required.

 

Duties: 

The Research Data Specialist (RDS) II conducts independent work to develop and implement the Water Quality Control Policy for Recycled Water (Recycled Water Policy). The RDS II is responsible for performing the more complex data analysis, research, and reporting. Duties include performing quality assurance and quality control on various datasets, evaluating the effectiveness of existing and potential changes to statewide policy for recycled water, and making recommendations for how to best carry out data collection and analysis. The RDS II is required to work independently, communicate effectively, and manage multiple tasks. The RDS II must have a strong working knowledge of data science and data visualization. The RDS II is expected to provide all members of the public with equitable services and treatment, collaborate with underserved communities and tribal governments, and work toward improving outcomes for all Californians. The RDS II will travel to attend meetings, trainings, conferences, or other program-related events (e.g., public outreach), including occasional overnight travel.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.
