PREPARATOR

Full-time/Non-Exempt/40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, incorporating occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Some periodic travel is required. The Museum is an EOE.

As the Preparator for the Nevada Museum of Art, this position will provide art handling/installation, and other support for the Museum’s curatorial department. This position reports to the Chief Preparator and Exhibition Designer. 

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Participates in all exhibition production meetings with Chief Preparator and appropriate exhibition curator, tracking exhibition installation schedules. 
  • Manages exhibition installations for agreed-upon exhibitions as designated by Chief Preparator. 
  • Participates in bi-weekly operations meetings as a liaison for the curatorial department. 
  • Understands and practices best museum policies and procedures when handling artwork of all sizes and types. 
  • Manages labor scheduling and supply ordering and organization (paint and general installation supplies), including requisitions and accounting.
  • Serves as primary departmental liaison for rental equipment vendors (forklift, gantry, spider lift, scissor lifts, or additional rentals)
  • Assists Chief Preparator and Exhibition Designer in administration of the department and implementation of installations.
  • Works closely with artists on the installation of their artwork, which can be detailed and complex.
  • Assists artists, direct volunteers and work independently to unpack, install, de-install and pack artwork with direction from the Chief Preparator, Registrar, and visiting couriers from other institutions. 
  • Coordinates scheduling with volunteers for all exhibitions and works with Chief Preparator to develop daily task lists during installation. 
  • Maintains pedestal and other exhibition furniture inventory, movement, and storage.  
  • Manages woodshop and preparatory materials in loading dock. Leads smaller fabrication projects; decks, pedestals, plinths, risers etc.
  • Performs daily gallery check and routine maintenance/cleaning of all exhibition spaces and art installations.  
  • Helps manage and maintain clean-prep and crate storage areas, and work with Facilities Manager to maintain off-site storage unit(s).
  • Installs intermittent temporary loans. 
  • Manages all gallery lighting needs, including maintaining inventory, liaising with technicians, and suppliers. 
  • Assists Registrar with art shipping/deliveries; may be required to drive a truck. 
  • Installs exhibition labels. 

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.A. in Art or a related field and or 2+ years of experience in professional art installation.
  • Scissor lift experience and/or certification.
  • Forklift experience and or certification.
  • 1+ year/s of lighting experience.
  • Carpentry skills and knowledge of power tools/safe use.
  • Box truck or other large vehicle driving experience.
