Public Information Officer

Annual Salary: $78,936.00 - $102,648.00

Position Information:

The Public Information Officer plans, coordinates and conducts the public information program for a Countywide program or a major County department; serves as liaison with the public, other government entities, partnering agencies, community groups and the media; and performs related work as required.


Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience preparing and disseminating information through social media platforms, radio, television, newspapers or other publications AND a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communications, marketing, political science, public administration, public relations, inter-governmental communications, journalism, television, telecommunications or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License or Certificate:

A valid driver’s license is required at time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The Ideal Candidate will:

- Have after-hours and on-call availability
- Have experience supporting the creation and management of social media on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook
- Have experience fielding social and traditional media by helping the communications team respond to inquiries and helping pitch story ideas about the organization
- Have experience monitoring media coverage through broadcast, print and any other form of media
- Have experience developing proactive internal and external messaging for crisis communication
- Have experience working with a team to develop proactive internal and external messaging for other communication
- Have experience compiling Media and Outreach metrics for reporting purposes
- Have experience assisting with press conferences and authorizing appearances or press statements from staff members and elected officials by helping to provide guidelines and strategies to present messages/information/issues properly
- Understand that there will be exposure to confidential, highly regulated, and often graphic content
- Exercise discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive information ensuring ethical communication practices that respect victims, minors, and active investigations
- Understand Nevada’s public records laws, media rights, redaction rules, and limits on releasing suspect or victim information
- Be willing to conduct media relations training for department personnel
