Neuroscience Intern (Pack STEM, Four Square Clinicals, Fall '25)

About Four Square Clinicals: 

Four Square Clinicals is a multidisciplinary behavioral health organization dedicated to providing evidence-based, person-centered care to individuals facing mental health, substance use, and co-occurring challenges. Headquartered in Northern Nevada, our clinic serves both urban and rural communities with a commitment to accessibility, cultural relevance, and clinical excellence. 

  

Our integrated model includes: 

  • Outpatient mental health services (therapy, assessments, case management) 
  • Substance use disorder treatment, including IOP, group therapy, and harm-reduction options 
  • Psychiatric medication management and collaborative care 
  • Mobile outreach units serving rural and homeless populations 
  • Housing support and transitional recovery programs 
  • A growing focus on brain-based care innovations, including EEG-informed treatment planning and neuromodulation readiness 

 

Internship Description: 

Primary Projects (60–70%) 

  • Create and revise client education handouts (trauma, brain basics, sleep, substance use) 
  • Design clinician cheat sheets for neuro-informed care (e.g., “How TBI Affects Engagement”) 
  • Draft literature reviews and summaries on: 
  • EEG-informed mental health treatment 
  • Brain-behavior links in PTSD, depression, TBI, and SUD 
  • Collaborate with Data Intern on treatment planning toolkit for brain-informed care 

Administrative Support 

  • Draft/refine content for the clinic website and intranet (neuroscience-informed, accessible) 
  • Help organize patient-facing resources in SharePoint 
  • Review and clean clinical templates (intake forms, psychoeducation, program overviews) 
  • Assist in preparing internal training content (slides, one-pagers) 
  • Attend team meetings and summarize key takeaways for director follow-up 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total) 
  • Assist in collecting and organizing clinical research data related to: 
    • EEG-informed personalized TMS/EMBP treatments 
    • Psychiatric symptoms in TBI, depression, anxiety, or SUDs 
    • Client response patterns to neuropsychiatric interventions 
  • Conduct literature reviews on topics such as: 
    • EEG biomarkers in mental illness 
    • TMS efficacy and emerging brain-based interventions 
    • Integrated care models for rural or underserved populations 
  • Help develop educational materials or infographics explaining neuroscience concepts to clients and families 
  • Participate in coordination of IRB proposals or academic collaborations (e.g., UNR) 
  • Observe clinical workflow in TMS, medication management, and mental health assessments (if permitted) 
  • Support program evaluation by contributing to reports on patient outcomes and feasibility studies 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  1. Contribute to EEG-Informed Care Innovation:  
    • Assist in organizing, reviewing, and understanding neuroscience-based treatment methods to help inform clinical decision-making. 
  2. Support Research Development: 
    • Provide foundational literature reviews, data organization, and documentation for future academic or clinical studies (e.g., EEG + EMBP) 
  3. Bridge Science and Practice: 
    • Help translate complex neuroscience topics into accessible materials for clients, families, and providers. 
  4. Build Research Experience in Applied Mental Health: 
    • Engage with clinical teams to learn how neuroscience intersects with behavioral health care delivery. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Fall ‘25 semester  
  • Summer ‘25 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program 
  • Strong research and critical thinking skills 
  • Ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize scientific findings 
  • Interest in mental health, brain-based treatments, and/or integrated care models 
  • Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Coursework or lab experience related to EEG, TMS, neuroanatomy, or psychopharmacology 
  • Familiarity with academic databases (PubMed, Google Scholar) and research tools (Zotero, Mendeley) 
  • Experience writing research summaries, abstracts, or educational materials 
  • Comfort communicating scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences 
  • Experience with Excel, data tables, or basic statistical analysis (SPSS, R, or Python a plus) 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern: 

4-6 hours per week, with optional increased hours during peak project phases 

 

Suggested Weekly Schedule: 

  • 2–3 workdays per week, ideally overlapping with clinical or research staff availability 
  • Flexible scheduling between 9 AM – 6 PM, with possibility of some remote work (e.g., for literature review or writing) 
  • On-site hours may be preferred for clinical observation or EEG-related work (if applicable) 

 

Pack STEM internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
